Paris Masters 2025 Day 2 Recap

Day Two in Paris delivered fireworks as Cameron Norrie shocked World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a gritty three-set win.

Valentin Vacherot kept his form rolling with a commanding upset of Jiří Lehečka, while Daniil Medvedev produced one of his sharpest performances in months to cruise past Jaume Munar.

Elsewhere, Félix Auger-Aliassime battled back from a set down to keep his Turin hopes alive, and João Fonseca continued to prove his Basel title was no fluke, topping Denis Shapovalov.

The Canadian, who currently sits ninth in the ATP Live Race To Turin, trailed by a set but dominated the second without dropping a point behind first serve and overpowered his opponent from that point onwards.

Joao Fonseca def. Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Joao Fonseca backed up his Basel ATP 500 title with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win over Denis Shapovalov in his Paris Masters debut.

Fonseca faced Shapo during his Basel title run, and this match was pretty similar with Fonseca showing clean hitting off both wings and overcoming some sort of hip issue. He will next face 10th seed Karen Khachanov.

Daniil Medvedev def. Jaume Munar 6-1, 6-3

Daniil Medvedev produced one of his best performances in a while, recording a 6-1, 6-3 dismantling of Jaume Munar. The 2020 Paris champion will next meet Grigor Dimitrov in the second round, which I think he will win comfortably.

Valentin Vacherot def. Jiri Lehecka 6-1, 6-3

Shanghai champion Valentin Vacherot continued his form with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 upset of Jiri Lehecka, setting up a second-round rematch with his cousin Arthur Rinderknech.

Vacherot defeated Rinderknech in three sets to claim the Shanghai title earlier this month as the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion in history, and he overwhelmed the Czech with depth and precision to record a statement win.

Cameron Norrie def. Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Cameron Norrie stunned World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, claiming his first-ever victory over a world number one player in five attempts.

The British left-hander capitalized on a wildly erratic performance from Alcaraz, who committed 54 unforced errors.

I thought Carlos started ok, but his level collapsed as the match wore on, and he struggled with timing, footwork, and baseline rhythm.

A big part of that is Norrie's game, which kills rhythm as his topspin forehand created lots of angles on the Paris court, whereas his flat backhand gave the Spaniard little to work with. It is the huge variation between strokes, along with his fitness/never-give-up attitude, that has led him to win 3 of their 8 meetings, which is a decent record.
